The UC Berkeley Overwatch sports team won the championship at a national Overwatch tournament this past weekend. The six-man team competed in an Overwatch tournament from Tespa Collegiate Series that went on for five months.
The UC Berkeley Overwatch team won their final round matches against Rutgers and the University of Toronto. The team won $42,000 in scholarships and prizes. This was good for nearly half the $100,000 in prizes offered in the tournament.
This is not the first time that UC Berkeley has won a prominent national esports title. The team also won at the Tespa Heroes of the Dorms tournament in 2015. The team regularly competes in a number of events relating to many esports although Overwatch has been the primary game that the team has been working on in recent time.
Managers for the team state that the six people involved have worked very hard each week to practice and figure out strategies for the tournament. This includes spending around six hours a week on average with practices with other Overwatch team. UC Berkeley is especially excited to see how the practice and efforts from the team have paid off over time.
The championship comes as the world of esports has become more prominent on many college campuses. There are more than 1,200 campuses engaging in esports events. The number of teams in the Tespa league has doubled in the past year to around 220 teams. The growth of the Twitch broadcasting platform is especially making it easier for UC the Tespa series to expand in popularity.
