Panda Global, a prominent esports organization, has received a significant sponship deal with Funimation. This marks the second time that an anime library has sponsored an esports group.
Panda Global, which hosts its own Heroes of the Storm team as well as Gears of War and Smash Bros. teams, did not release details on the terms of the agreement.
Funimation states that video games have become a key part of anime culture in recent. This especially comes as many anime programs held by the company are being made available through streaming services on video game consoles.
The sponsorship is expected to entail many points like team uniforms featuring the Funimation logo or esports events being promoted amid other Funimation entities. Panda Global is especially excited about the move. In a direct reference to what has become a popular online anime meme, Panda Global states that the sponsorship rates at “over 9000.”
This move comes as the anime film style has been very popular among esports players and fans. It especially become popular enough to where Tencent, the parent company of Riot Games, will be converting a Japanese comic or manga about a retired gamer into a new anime film.
Funimation is a Texas-based group that distributes a variety of anime programs into the United States. It holds deals with many anime studios from Asia to repackage and translate or dub various anime shows for audiences outside of Asia. It joins Crunchyroll as the only two such anime libraries to be associated with the esports scene.
