Overwatch World Cup has officially started, or rather the group stage of this competition has begun with the matches in group A and group B of this competition. Overwatch World Cup is one of the biggest Overwatch competitions this year. Instead of featuring teams playing against each other, this will be a tournament in which each team will be representing their own country.
After a long process of organizing committees in all countries that secured participation, and after those committees finally revealed the names of the players that will be playing for their country, it was time for the Overwatch World Cup to start finally.
First Teams to Secure the Next Stage
The matches in the first two groups of this competition were played last weekend in Shanghai, China. Before the start of the competition, China and France were the biggest favorites for finishing in the top places in the group. In the end, that turned out to be true as both teams displayed their best performance when it mattered the most.
The group stage of the competition proved very simple for both teams. However, even though they did not lose a single map in the group stage, there were moments when both China and France showed a lack of concentration and not so good decisions. Luckily for them, those mistakes did not cost them a lot as they did not have that strong of an opponent.
In the group A, China finished in the first place while Norway won the second place, which meant they would be playing against France in the second stage of the competition. On the other hand, China had to face Thailand in the playoffs, and even though they had some problems, they managed to win in that match as well.
The format of the competition says that two groups will be played in one group and two best teams from each group will advance to the playoffs that will be played in the same city. Winners of those two matches will then advance to the main event of this competition that will be played in Anaheim, California during BlizzCon 2017.
In the first match of the playoffs, China faced Thailand, and that match did not start well for China. In a surprising move, Thailand managed to win the first map, and that brought them to the verge of making possibly the biggest upset in Overwatch history. However, China managed to pull themselves together, and they managed to turn around that match which led them to eventually claim the win. Harder than expected, China lived up to the expectations placed upon them before the tournament.
During the group stage, France’s problems were most obvious against Denmark who came close to defeating one of the biggest favorites of the competition, but France would not allow that. However, they managed to significantly improve their performance in the playoffs match they played against Norway. Unfortunately for Norwegians, France managed to find their best form and win their spot in the Main Event without any problems.
Next weekend, teams from group C and group D will be playing their matches after which we will have two more teams that secured their spots in the Main Event of the Overwatch World Cup.
