Overwatch Monthly Melee is one of the rare Overwatch LAN competitions that have been gaining popularity in the recent period. With the lack of Overwatch LAN competitions, many of the biggest and the best Overwatch teams have been participating in these events, boosting their popularity.
The prize pool for these competitions is $10,000, but these competitions represented a permanent installment of the Overwatch tournament that are, in general, not being organized in big numbers. Now, it seems that these monthly competitions will be coming to an end with the May edition of the tournament.
The organizers of these events have officially confirmed that the May’s Overwatch Monthly Melee will be the last and that these competitions will no longer be organized. The first Overwatch Monthly Melee was held back in April 2016. Since then, it has become one of the most interesting Overwatch tournaments during the entire year.
However, according to the organizers’ statement on this issue, obtaining a license for the organization of this competition has become very problematic. Because of that, organizers have ended their efforts to obtain licenses for the remaining part of the season. According to the same statement, they have been aware of this fact for more than two months, and they have been preparing for this.
According to MrAlexDanger, in the last couple of months, it became clear that the number Overwatch tournaments organized by the third-parties will be significantly reduced. Besides that, he also said all licenses that all third-parties had for the organization of Overwatch tournaments will be suspended from June 1st.
It seems that Blizzard is reducing the numbers of Overwatch tournaments in order to switch focus on the Overwatch League that will be starting soon. By eliminating a big number of Overwatch tournaments, Blizzard Entertainment is making their tournaments and the Overwatch League the main Overwatch competition in the world.
However, it seems that they do not understand that Overwatch League will be a competition for itself. Overwatch tournaments organized by third-parties would not be a serious competition for Blizzard’s Overwatch League.
Blizzard Entertainment has not officially confirmed a lot of things when it comes to the Overwatch League. Even though it seems it will be starting in a couple of months, it is still not sure whether or not this competition will actually kick off.
Besides that, the reports have been indicating that Blizzard will be selling spots in the Overwatch League for the amount between 15 and 30 million dollars. This will be yet another hit for smaller Overwatch teams that might not have that kind of source of finances. Because of that, more and more people have come out criticizing Blizzard that they are making Overwatch League an elite competition only for the wealthiest eSports organizations.
The last edition of the Overwatch Monthly Melee competition will be held on May 20th and May 21st this year. The organizers have not confirmed any teams that will be participating in this event, but it is expected that the names of those teams will be revealed very soon.
